Coating around badges, edges and tight areas without losing control

Coating around badges, edges and tight areas without losing control

Badges, sharp edges and narrow gaps are common places for coating residue to collect. The answer is not more product. It is better cleaning, smaller working sections and more deliberate inspection.

Prepare the difficult areas first

Clean around lettering, panel joins and trim before final surface preparation. Trapped polish, wax, dirt or water can move onto the applicator later. Use tools that are safe for the surface and do not force contamination deeper into gaps.

Decide what must not be coated

Identify textured trim, porous material, damaged surfaces and any substrate not approved by the current coating instructions. Protect or avoid those areas as appropriate. If compatibility is unclear, contact OPTiX before application.

A controlled method

  1. Set up direct and angled inspection lighting.
  2. Reduce the working section around complex shapes.
  3. Apply only the amount directed by the current label.
  4. Prevent liquid from pooling against lettering or in panel gaps.
  5. Level the accessible faces with the correct clean towel.
  6. Inspect edges from more than one direction before moving on.

Should badges be removed?

Not automatically. Removal can damage paint or the badge and may need new adhesive or accurate alignment. Leave removal to someone equipped to do it safely, especially on valuable, fragile or electronically integrated trim. Sometimes wrapping a cloth around a wrapping squeegee to wipe the edges of badges can help.

When access is too limited

If you cannot apply and level the coating reliably, do not flood the gap and hope for the best. Stop at a controlled boundary. A slightly smaller protected area is preferable to hardened residue in a place that cannot be corrected safely.

Best to recommend to the customer that they should think about buying replacement badges or having the removed and refitted with new double sided tape which is fiddly at best.

Review the current OPTiX coating range and the coating selection guide before planning the job.

Frequently asked questions

Should badges be removed?

Only when there is a clear reason and they can be removed and refitted without damage. It is not an automatic coating step.

Can coating touch textured trim?

Only if the exact product instructions approve that substrate. Otherwise protect or avoid it.

How do I inspect narrow edges?

Use smaller sections, direct and angled light, and change your viewing position. Stop if safe levelling is not possible.
