Water beading is not the only way to judge a ceramic coating
Water beading is easy to photograph, but it is not a complete coating report card. Traffic film, mineral deposits, wash chemistry and surface damage can all change water behaviour without proving that the coating has failed.
Start with the wash history
Record what products have been used, how the vehicle has been washed and whether it has been exposed to bore water, sprinklers, industrial fallout, coastal salt or neglected contamination. This context often explains a sudden change better than the age of the coating alone.
Gather evidence across the vehicle
- Wash the vehicle with compatible products and clean tools.
- Observe whether water beads, sheets or sits differently between panels.
- Compare upper, lower, horizontal and sheltered areas.
- Check drying behaviour and whether the surface feels contaminated after washing.
- Inspect for water spots, etching, overspray, scratches or repair work.
Beading and sheeting both need context
Tight beads are not automatically proof of perfect protection, and flatter water behaviour is not automatically failure. A contaminated surface may mask the coating. Added products can also change the result, making diagnosis harder.
Do not polish before diagnosis
Polishing may remove or disturb the coating. Start with the least aggressive compatible cleaning process and reassess. If bonded contamination or damage remains, seek product-specific advice before escalating.
When an installer should inspect it
Ask for professional assessment when the behaviour changed suddenly, the history is uncertain, visible damage remains or the vehicle is still within a documented installer care or warranty process. Use the current OPTiX installer directory when appropriate.

Frequently asked questions
Does weak beading prove coating failure?
No. Contamination, wash products and surface condition can change water behaviour. Clean and inspect before deciding.
Can traffic film affect beading?
Yes. A film over the surface can mask the behaviour of the protection beneath it.
When should an installer inspect it?
When safe washing does not restore clarity, damage is visible, the history is uncertain or documented service terms may apply.
