Cutting compound why use Utopia compound
Why Use UTOPIA Cutting Compound?
OPTiX UTOPIA Cutting Compound is the first stage in the OPTiX polishing system.
It is designed for paint correction work where stronger defect removal is needed before the paint is refined with a finishing polish.
UTOPIA uses German diminishing abrasive technology, which means the abrasives start with stronger cutting ability and then break down as you work the product. This helps remove defects while also leaving the finish cleaner than a harsh compound that only cuts aggressively.

What is UTOPIA used for?
UTOPIA is used when the paint needs more correction than a light polish can provide.
It is suitable for reducing:
- Swirl marks
- Oxidation
- Water mark staining
- Weathered paint
- Light to moderate sanding marks
- Haze from previous polishing
- Heavier defects before final refining
The exact result depends on the paint hardness, pad choice, machine type, technique and how much correction is safely possible.
Stage 1 in the OPTiX 2-stage system
UTOPIA is the cutting stage.
For best results, it should be followed with OPTiX UTOPIA Ultra Fine when extra gloss, clarity and final refinement are needed.
The simple system is:
- Stage 1: UTOPIA Cutting Compound for defect removal
- Stage 2: UTOPIA Ultra Fine for gloss, clarity and final refinement
This keeps the system easy to understand: cut first, refine second.
Why diminishing abrasives matter
Diminishing abrasives change as you work them.
At the start of polishing, the abrasives have more cutting power. As the polish is worked across the paint, the abrasives break down finer. This helps the compound start with correction and finish cleaner than a basic aggressive compound.
This is useful when you want correction power without leaving the paint unnecessarily rough or hazy.
Choosing the right pad with UTOPIA
Pad choice changes how UTOPIA performs.
Use the pad based on the paint condition and the result you are chasing.
- Purple Haze Wool Pad — highest cut for stronger correction work
- Green Slim Line Foam Pad — heavy cut foam pad
- Orange Slim Line Foam Pad — medium cut foam pad
- White Slim Line Foam Pad — light polishing pad
For maximum correction, start with a stronger pad. For a cleaner finish, step down to a softer pad or finish with UTOPIA Ultra Fine.
UTOPIA with dual action polishers
UTOPIA can be used with suitable dual action polishers and rotary polishers.
With dual action polishers, pad choice matters. The OPTiX Slim Line Pads are designed to feel smoother and more controlled compared with thicker pads because the pad sits closer to the backing plate.
This can help reduce pad roll and give a more direct polishing feel.

When to use UTOPIA Ultra Fine after UTOPIA
After using a cutting compound, some paints will need a finishing stage.
This is especially true on dark colours, soft paint, piano black trims or high-gloss panels where any haze can show easily.
Use UTOPIA Ultra Fine after UTOPIA when you want:
- More gloss
- Sharper reflections
- Cleaner final clarity
- Better finish on soft paint
- Refinement before ceramic coating
Before applying a ceramic coating
If the vehicle is being coated, the paint should be corrected and refined before coating application.
A coating does not fix poor paint. The polishing stage creates the clarity, and the coating adds protection, slickness and the final wet gloss effect.
After polishing, remove polishing oils and residue with proper surface preparation before applying a coating such as OPTiX OP888 or OPTiX FMJ Graphene.
Simple recommendation
Use UTOPIA Cutting Compound when paint needs real correction.
Use UTOPIA Ultra Fine after it when the finish needs extra gloss and refinement.
Cut with UTOPIA. Refine with UTOPIA Ultra Fine. Then protect with the right OPTiX coating.
