The last wipe before ceramic coating is not a cosmetic step. It is the point where you confirm that the paint is actually ready to accept the coating. If polishing oils, dust, old protection, moisture or cleaner residue remain, you can get uneven application, smearing or a finish that is difficult to inspect properly.
This guide explains a sensible workshop method for the final surface check before applying OPTiX OP888. It does not replace the current product label, safety data sheet or OPTiX technical directions. What the final panel wipe is meant to achieve
The goal is simple: leave a cool, dry and stable surface free from loose dust, polishing residue, oils and other contamination that could interfere with coating application or inspection. The goal is not to make the paint look temporarily glossy. In fact, the final wipe often reveals the true condition of the paint after fillers or oily residue have been removed.
A panel wipe cannot correct scratches, oxidation, sanding marks, unstable paint or poor polishing. It is a preparation and inspection step, not paint correction.
Suitable and unsuitable jobs
Suitable
- Modern OEM clear coat that has been washed, decontaminated and corrected as required.
- Sound refinished paint after its condition and coating suitability have been confirmed.
- A vehicle already inspected under strong, even lighting.
- Suitable exterior paint being prepared for OP888 under the current directions.
Stop and reassess when
- The paint is hot, damp or still holding water in panel gaps, badges or trims.
- The finish is chalky, flaking, lifting, soft or otherwise unstable.
- Fresh paint has not been cleared for coating by the paint manufacturer or repairer.
- You do not know whether the preparation chemical is compatible with the surface.
- There is visible contamination that needs proper washing or decontamination rather than another wipe.
- The vehicle has sensitive, aged, matte, custom or unusual finishes that have not been approved for the process.
Tools, products and PPE
- A suitable coating-preparation product approved for the surface.
- Several clean, low-lint microfibre towels reserved for coating preparation.
- Protective gloves and any additional PPE required by the current label or safety data sheet.
- Strong, even inspection lighting plus a second light or viewing angle where practical.
- Clean compressed air or a safe drying method for trapped water, if appropriate for the workshop.
- Fresh OP888 applicators and removal towels kept away from the preparation area until the surface is ready.

Environment and surface checks
Good preparation can be undone by a poor environment. Work out of direct sun on a cool surface, with enough light to see faint residue and dust. Avoid wind, airborne overspray and active polishing nearby. Make sure the vehicle is completely dry, including mirrors, door handles, badges, trims and panel gaps.
Check your towels before they touch the paint. A towel that has been washed with fabric softener, used with wax or sealant, dropped on the floor or stored uncovered is not suitable for the final wipe. When there is any doubt, replace it.
Numbered method: the final readiness check
- Finish the correction work first. Complete any required machine polishing, then remove obvious compound and polish residue. Inspect for haze, sanding marks and deeper defects. Decide whether the finish is acceptable before moving to coating preparation.
- Remove loose dust safely. Clear polishing dust from panel edges, badges, trims and gaps without dragging it across the paint. Do not flood a nearly prepared car unless the remaining contamination genuinely requires another wash.
- Confirm the vehicle is dry. Inspect mirrors, handles, emblems, fuel doors and panel joins. Trapped water can run onto a prepared panel during coating application. If moisture appears, dry the area and inspect it again.
- Divide the vehicle into manageable sections. Work methodically so no panel is missed. A bonnet, roof or large door may need to be divided into smaller working areas.
- Apply the preparation product as directed. Follow the current label for how the product should be applied. Avoid saturating edges, porous trims or openings. Never invent a dwell time or dilution.
- Wipe with a clean towel face. Use light, controlled passes. Turn the towel frequently so removed residue is not spread over the next section. Replace the towel when it becomes damp, loaded or begins to drag.
- Use a second clean towel where needed. A separate finishing towel helps check that no preparation residue remains. Do not keep rubbing a section with a contaminated towel.
- Inspect from more than one angle. Look for streaks, oily smears, polishing residue, lint and remaining defects. Change the light position or your viewing angle. Dark colours and curved panels can hide residue when viewed from only one direction.
- Check edges and neighbouring materials. Inspect around trim, badges and panel gaps without forcing liquid into them. If a sensitive surface was accidentally contacted, follow the current product directions and stop if compatibility is uncertain.
- Keep the prepared surface clean. Once a panel passes inspection, do not touch it with bare hands or rest bottles, cables or towels on it. Keep polishing and washing activity away from the prepared vehicle.
- Perform one final walk-around. Check the entire vehicle for missed sections, dust and water runs. Only open OP888 when the work area, applicators, removal towels, lighting and surface are ready.
Readiness checkpoints
A panel is ready when it is cool, dry and visually consistent, with no obvious dust, lint, oily film, cleaner residue or water runs. Your towel should not be pulling fresh polishing residue from the surface. The true paint condition should be visible under inspection lighting.
Do not use water beading as the only readiness test. Surface behaviour can be influenced by contamination, cleaners and previous protection. A careful visual and tactile workshop inspection is more useful at this stage.
Common mistakes
- Using one towel for the whole vehicle: it can redistribute residue. Keep enough clean towels available and change them early.
- Rushing from polishing to coating: dust and oils can remain around edges even when the centre of the panel looks clean.
- Applying too much preparation liquid: excess product can collect in gaps or leave residue. Follow the current label.
- Working on warm paint: this can change how the preparation product behaves and make inspection harder.
- Touching prepared paint: fingerprints and skin oils mean the section needs to be checked again.
- Using poor lighting: residue that is invisible under one light may become obvious after coating.
- Trying to wipe away a paint defect: scratches, oxidation and unstable paint require assessment or correction, not repeated solvent wiping.
Troubleshooting
The towel keeps showing residue
Stop and identify the source. The panel may still contain polish, the towel may be contaminated, or the preparation product may be lifting material from an unstable finish. Change to verified clean towels and reassess. Do not proceed until the cause is understood.
The surface looks smeary
Check surface temperature, towel condition, application amount and the current label directions. Use clean towel faces and inspect under a second light. If smearing continues, stop rather than coating over it.
Water keeps appearing from gaps
Dry the affected areas again and allow the vehicle to stabilise in the work area. Recheck after opening doors, mirrors or the fuel flap as appropriate. Do not apply coating beside an active water run.
A defect appears after the final wipe
The wipe may have revealed a mark previously disguised by polishing residue. Decide whether it is acceptable. If correction is required, complete it properly and repeat the preparation process on that section.
After the surface is ready
Apply OP888 only in accordance with its current label and OPTiX directions. Work in manageable sections, level and wipe as directed, and inspect from more than one angle. Replace application or removal towels when they become loaded or begin to drag.
