First: beading is not the whole coating

  • A suitable automotive shampoo and clean wash media
  • Clean buckets, suitable brushes for tight areas and clean drying towels
  • A hose or pressure washer used safely for the vehicle
  • Nitrile gloves and any additional PPE required by the current product labels and safety data sheets
  • Good inspection lighting
  • A suitable contamination remover only when the current label approves it for the surface and coating situation

A practical coating-condition test

1. Record the starting condition

Before washing, note where the water behaviour looks weak. Check the bonnet, roof, lower doors, rear panels and areas behind the wheels. Lower panels and the rear of the vehicle often collect more road film than upper sections, so uneven performance can be a contamination clue.

Take a few clear photographs for your own comparison. They are not laboratory proof, but they help you avoid relying on memory after the wash.

2. Complete a careful maintenance wash

Wash the vehicle using clean tools and a suitable automotive shampoo. Work on a cool surface and do not allow products to dry on the paint. Pay attention to lower sections, badges, mirrors and panel edges where residue can remain.

3. Rinse thoroughly and observe

After the normal wash, rinse the vehicle thoroughly. Watch how water leaves each panel rather than looking only for round beads. Compare a clean upper panel with a lower panel that previously looked weak.

Checkpoint: if water behaviour improves noticeably after the wash, surface grime was at least part of the problem. Continue with good maintenance rather than assuming the coating needs replacement.

4. Inspect for specific contamination

Dry the vehicle safely and inspect under good light. Look for bonded roughness, mineral spotting, oily road film, insect residue, sap or staining. Do not use bare-hand feel as your only test; clean paint can still contain contamination that needs the correct method.

5. Test the least aggressive suitable treatment

Rinse the treated test area and an adjacent untreated area under the same conditions. A clear improvement in the test patch suggests that contamination was masking the surface behaviour. Heavy cleaning does not automatically provide a better diagnosis. It can create extra risk and make the result harder to interpret.

Polishing as a first response

Polish is abrasive. It can change the paint and coating, so it should be used only when inspection supports correction and the operator understands the consequence.

Adding a topper before the surface is clean
