Ceramic Coating Workspace Setup: An OP888 Pre-Application Checklist
A ceramic coating job can go wrong before the bottle is opened. Poor lighting hides residue, moving air carries dust, damp panel gaps release water, and a rushed towel setup leaves you searching for clean cloths while the coating is already on the paint.
This guide explains how we set up a practical workspace for OPTiX OP888. It does not replace the current product label or safety information. Conditions affect coating behaviour, so follow the current OPTiX directions for the exact application and stop if the surface or environment cannot be controlled.
What this setup is suitable for
This approach is intended for coating suitable automotive paint and other surfaces currently approved for OP888. It suits a careful DIY job, a mobile detailer working inside a controlled space, or a professional workshop wanting a repeatable pre-application check.
Do not treat the checklist as permission to coat unstable paint, fresh repairs that have not been cleared by the paint supplier, a hot panel, a wet surface, or any sensitive material whose compatibility is unknown. Test questionable surfaces and obtain the relevant manufacturer advice first.
Tools, products and PPE to have ready
- OPTiX OP888 in the correct live size or an OP888 Standard Kit
- A clean coating applicator suitable for the surface
- Several clean, dry microfibre towels reserved for coating work
- Separate towels for the first levelling pass, final inspection and accidental spills
- Bright, even inspection lighting, including a handheld light if available
- Clean nitrile gloves and any other PPE required by the current label and SDS
- A stable work table or trolley where the open bottle cannot be knocked over
- Surface-preparation products appropriate to the job
- Clean masking material where protection of adjacent sensitive areas is required

Check the vehicle before preparing the room
Confirm that the finish is ready
Coating preserves the finish underneath it; it does not hide scratches, sanding marks, oxidation or poor polishing. Inspect the vehicle under strong lighting. Decide which defects must be corrected and which will honestly remain. If the paint condition is uncertain, measure and assess it before machine polishing.
Find every place water can hide
Mirror housings, badges, handles, trims, fuel doors, panel gaps and wheel hardware can hold water after washing. A single drip crossing a freshly coated section can disturb the job. Blow out or carefully dry these areas, then allow enough time for any remaining moisture to show itself before coating.
Check for contamination
The surface must be properly washed, decontaminated as required, polished where necessary, cleared of polishing residue and completely dry. Run a clean inspection towel lightly across the prepared finish. It should not collect obvious residue or reveal missed polish around edges and trim.
Set up the workspace step by step
- Remove dust sources. Finish sweeping, blowing and other dusty work before the vehicle enters its final coating stage. Do not run a polisher, pressure washer or air tool nearby while coating is being applied.
- Control moving air. Avoid strong fans, open roller doors and direct air-conditioning flow across the panel. Ventilation still matters, but it should not push dust or debris onto the wet coating.
- Check the panel, not only the room. The vehicle should be indoors on a cool, dry surface. A room that feels comfortable can still contain a hot bonnet or a cold panel carrying condensation. Follow the current label for acceptable conditions rather than guessing from touch alone.
- Build useful lighting. Use overhead light for general coverage and angled light to reveal residue. Walk around the panel and view it from more than one direction. If you cannot clearly see the film and the final wipe, improve the lighting before opening the bottle.
- Divide the vehicle into manageable sections. Plan a logical route that avoids leaning across completed panels. Keep sections small enough to apply, level and inspect without rushing. Working area and timing must follow current OPTiX directions and the actual conditions.
- Lay out towels in order. Keep clean towels in a covered container or clean stack. Separate unused cloths from used ones. Never put a coating towel back into the clean pile.
- Protect the bottle. Place OP888 upright on a stable trolley, away from paint edges. Keep the cap clean and replace it when appropriate. Do not balance the bottle on the vehicle.
- Prepare for a stop. Know where the clean spill towel, bin, fresh gloves and spare applicator are. If something touches the floor or becomes contaminated, replace it rather than risking the finish.
- Do a final dry run. Without coating, walk through the first section: applicator, first towel, second towel, light inspection, then move position. If anything is difficult to reach, fix the layout now.
Final checkpoints before opening OP888
- The product is active, in suitable condition and intended for the selected surface.
- The paint result has been accepted under strong light.
- No water is emerging from gaps, trims or fittings.
- The panel is clean, cool, dry and within current product directions.
- Lighting shows the surface from at least two useful angles.
- Applicators, towels, gloves and backup items are within reach.
- Dust-producing work has stopped and unnecessary people are out of the area.
- You have enough uninterrupted time to complete and inspect the planned section.
If one of these checks fails, correct it before proceeding. Stopping for ten minutes is better than locking a preventable problem under the coating.
Common setup mistakes
Using only bright overhead lighting
Brightness alone is not enough. Flat overhead light can make residue difficult to see. Add angled inspection light and change your viewing position after every section.
Starting with too few towels
A loaded towel can drag residue instead of removing it cleanly. Have enough clean towels ready and retire them early. Do not use towels carrying polish, wax, detergent or fabric-softener residue.
Coating immediately after washing
Paint can appear dry while water remains behind trims and badges. Recheck gaps after the vehicle has sat in the coating area. If water continues to emerge, the vehicle is not ready.
Trying to coat around other workshop work
Polishing dust, tyre work, open doors and people brushing past the car add risk. Give the coating job its own clean working window.
Troubleshooting before application
Dust keeps landing on the panel: stop and locate the source. Check doors, fans, clothing, towels and nearby work. Clean the surface again with the correct preparation process.
The panel feels hotter than surrounding panels: move the vehicle away from heat or direct sun and allow conditions to stabilise. Do not invent a cooling shortcut.
Moisture returns from a gap: dry the area again and wait. Do not coat toward an active drip.
You cannot see the residue clearly: change the light angle, improve contrast and reduce the section size. If inspection remains unreliable, stop.
A towel or applicator touches the floor: remove it from the job. A replacement costs far less than correcting contamination dragged across paint.
After the coating is applied
Keep the vehicle in the controlled environment and follow the current OP888 curing directions before exposure to water, cleaning chemicals or outdoor contamination. Do not guess cure time from another coating or an old instruction sheet. Conditions and current directions matter.

Can I apply OP888 outside?
A controlled indoor space is the safer choice because direct sun, wind, dust, moisture and sudden temperature changes are difficult to manage. If you cannot create conditions that meet the current instructions, postpone the job.
Do I need professional workshop lighting?
You need lighting that clearly reveals the coating film and missed residue from different angles. Expensive equipment is not the point; reliable inspection is.
Can I reuse general washing towels for levelling?
Use clean towels appropriate for coating work and free from detergent, fabric softener, polish or previous product residue. When towel history is uncertain, use a verified clean replacement.
When should I use a professional?
Stop and use an OPTiX certified coating installer when paint correction, surface condition, environmental control or residue inspection is beyond your current experience. Professional installation is also appropriate when the vehicle or finish carries a high correction risk.
