How to Ceramic Coat Wheels with OP888: Preparation, Application and Aftercare
Wheel coatings are often sold as though the job starts when the bottle opens. It does not. The result is decided by wheel condition, cleaning, decontamination, drying and inspection long before the coating reaches the applicator.
Rimcoat is no longer offered in the current OPTiX range. For most people coating suitable wheel finishes, OPTiX OP888 is the sensible starting point because it has controlled application behaviour and is suitable for prepared DIY users, developing detailers and professionals. “Forgiving” still does not mean foolproof.
This guide explains the complete process without pretending every wheel, finish or workshop condition is the same. Read the current OP888 label and safety information before starting. What a wheel coating can and cannot do
Applied to a correctly prepared, suitable wheel finish, OP888 forms a ceramic layer that can support easier ongoing cleaning and resistance to normal chemical exposure. It does not repair clear-coat failure, hide scratches, stop stone chips, prevent every stain or make wheels maintenance-free.
A coating preserves what is underneath it. If brake dust, tar, mineral deposits, polishing residue or moisture remains on the wheel, coating over it will not produce a clean professional result.
Which wheel finishes are suitable?
The current OP888 listing approves use on suitable wheel finishes. That wording matters. Factory clear-coated alloy wheels in sound condition are usually a more straightforward starting point than aged, repaired, custom-painted, raw, anodised, polished or unknown finishes.
Inspect every wheel and test an inconspicuous area when the finish is sensitive, aged, custom or refinished. Do not coat:
- Peeling, lifting, blistered or unstable clear coat.
- A recently refinished wheel before the paint manufacturer’s cure requirements have been met.
- A hot wheel, wet wheel or wheel with contamination trapped around fasteners and edges.
- Tyre tread, brake discs, brake pads or braking surfaces.
- An unknown or sensitive finish until compatibility has been confirmed.
If you cannot identify the finish or safely correct its condition, stop and ask OPTiX or use a competent professional.
Should the wheels stay on the vehicle?
You can coat the accessible wheel face with the wheels installed. Removing a wheel gives better access to the barrel, spoke backs and recesses, but it also creates lifting and refitting risks.
Only remove wheels if you have the correct lifting equipment, safe support points, suitable stands and the competence to refit and tighten them to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification. Never rely on a jack alone. If there is any uncertainty, leave the wheels fitted and work only on safely accessible areas.
Tools, products and PPE
- OPTiX OP888 ceramic coating.
- Suitable wheel cleaner and automotive shampoo for the wheel finish.
- Dedicated wash mitts, brushes and detailing tools that will not scratch the surface.
- A suitable method for removing iron contamination and tar where required and approved for the finish.
- Clean drying towels or safe filtered air.
- A current coating-preparation product that removes oils and residue without harming the wheel finish.
- A clean microfibre or foam coating applicator.
- At least three clean, suitable microfibre removal towels.
- Nitrile gloves, good ventilation and strong inspection lighting.

Do not use towels or applicators that have touched tyre dressing, greasy suspension parts or heavily contaminated wheel barrels.
Environment and surface checks
Work in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sun and airborne dust. The wheel must be cool and completely dry. Check spoke junctions, lug recesses, valve areas and the bead edge carefully; water can hide there and run into a fresh coating.
Set up enough lighting to inspect the wheel from different angles. Curved spokes, machined faces and gloss black finishes can make residue difficult to see from one position.
How to prepare wheels for OP888
- Cool the wheel. Do not start immediately after driving or braking. Confirm the wheel and nearby brake components are cool enough to work around safely.
- Rinse loose contamination. Remove grit before making contact with the finish. Pay attention to spoke openings and the lower barrel.
- Wash methodically. Clean the face, spokes, lug recesses and accessible barrel with tools suited to the finish. Work from cleaner areas towards dirtier areas and rinse tools regularly.
- Remove bonded contamination where required. Brake dust, iron particles and tar can remain after washing. Use only a compatible process and follow the current directions for that chemical and wheel finish. Never mix chemicals.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove cleaner from recesses, fasteners, valve areas and the bead edge. Residual chemical can interfere with the coating or damage surrounding materials.
- Inspect the finish. Under good lighting, look for staining, embedded contamination, scratches, corrosion and clear-coat failure. Decide whether polishing is appropriate before continuing.
- Polish only when needed and safe. Correction can improve a sound clear-coated surface, but it can also damage thin, machined, satin or unknown finishes. If you cannot confirm a safe method, do not experiment.
- Remove oils and residue. Use a suitable coating-preparation product approved for the surface. Turn towels frequently so residue is lifted rather than spread.
- Dry every recess. Water around lug holes, valve stems and spoke joins must be removed. Allow time for hidden moisture to emerge, then inspect again.
- Perform a final bare-surface check. The finish should be clean, stable, cool and streak-free before OP888 is opened.
How to apply OP888 to wheels
- Read the current directions. Confirm the supplied label, PPE, working conditions, levelling method and cure instructions. Do not substitute a timing remembered from another coating.
- Plan small sections. Divide the wheel into manageable areas such as several spokes and the adjacent rim section. Complex shapes need smaller sections than a flat panel.
- Load a clean applicator. Apply enough product to create a controlled, even film without flooding edges, holes or the tyre bead.
- Spread evenly. Cover the intended section methodically, including safe spoke edges and recesses. Keep product away from braking surfaces and unapproved materials.
- Level according to the current label. Use the first towel to remove and level residue, then a second clean towel for the final pass. Replace towels when they load up or begin to drag.
- Inspect from several angles. Move the light or your viewing position. Look for dark patches, rainbowing, smears or residue collecting at spoke junctions.
- Correct problems immediately within the current directions. Do not continue around the wheel while leaving a suspected high spot behind.
- Repeat section by section. Keep a consistent path so no spoke or rim area is missed or coated twice by accident.
- Complete a final inspection. Check the face, recesses, rim edge and accessible barrel before moving the wheel or vehicle.
- Follow the current cure instructions. Protect the coating from water, chemicals and contamination for the period stated on the current OP888 directions.
Checkpoints before calling the job finished
- The finish looks even under direct and angled light.
- No coating residue remains around spoke joins, lug recesses or valve areas.
- No product has contacted braking surfaces or tyre tread.
- The wheel has a documented cure period and will remain protected accordingly.
- Used coating towels and applicators are isolated and handled according to the current safety directions.
Common wheel-coating mistakes
Coating over brake dust or tar
If contamination remains, stop and clean again. A coating is not a substitute for decontamination.
Working on warm wheels
Heat can change working behaviour and reduce control. Let the wheel cool and use the current product directions rather than guessing.
Using one towel for the whole job
A loaded towel can move residue instead of removing it. Keep several clean towels ready and change them early.
Missing water in recesses
A drop emerging from a lug hole or spoke junction can interrupt a fresh coating. Dry thoroughly, wait, then inspect again before application.
Treating every wheel finish the same
Gloss clear coat, satin paint, machined faces and custom refinishing do not automatically tolerate the same cleaning or polishing method. Identify and test first.
Troubleshooting
I can see a smear or dark patch
Stop immediately and follow the current OP888 correction directions. Do not add random solvents or aggressive polishing while the coating condition is unknown.
The applicator is dragging
Check whether the surface is too warm, the applicator is contaminated or the section is too large. Replace suspect applicators and return to controlled sections.
Water appeared after preparation
Do not coat through it. Dry the area, allow trapped moisture to emerge and repeat the final surface-preparation check.
The finish is peeling or corroded
Do not coat it as a cosmetic cover-up. The underlying finish needs proper assessment or repair first.
Aftercare for coated wheels
Once the current cure requirements have been met, wash the wheels regularly so brake dust and road contamination do not build into a difficult layer. Use compatible cleaners, clean wash tools and non-abrasive drying methods. Avoid harsh chemicals and aggressive scrubbing unless the current OPTiX directions specifically allow them.
Inspect the wheel during normal washing. A change in water behaviour does not automatically prove that the coating has failed; contamination can mask surface behaviour. Clean and assess the finish before deciding it needs more product.

Can a beginner use OP888 on wheels?
OP888 is the controlled, forgiving option in the current range and can suit a properly prepared DIY user. The user still needs a suitable wheel finish, PPE, good lighting, clean towels and enough time to work carefully.
Can I coat the wheel barrel?
Yes, where the barrel finish is suitable and safely accessible. Removing wheels requires correct lifting and refitting competence. Do not take risks simply to reach more surface area.
Does OP888 stop brake dust?
No. Brake dust will still be produced and settle on the wheel. A correctly applied coating is intended to support easier maintenance, not eliminate contamination.
How much product and how long should I wait?
