OP888 Ceramic Coating High Spots: How to Prevent and Assess Uneven Residue
A ceramic-coating high spot is an area where residue has not been levelled evenly before it becomes difficult to remove. Under workshop lighting it may appear as a darker patch, rainbow smear, oily-looking streak or sharp edge between sections.
High spots are usually prevented by controlling section size, towel condition, lighting and inspection. They are not something to ignore and hope will disappear. The safest correction depends on how recently the coating was applied, how far it has cured and what surface is underneath it.
What an OP888 high spot looks like
Typical signs include:
- a dark or saturated patch that changes as you move around the panel;
- rainbow or oily-looking residue under an inspection light;
- a straight line where two application sections overlapped;
- smears that remain after a clean finishing towel pass;
- uneven reflections that were not present after paint preparation.
Do not confuse a high spot with sanding marks, polishing haze, water spots, clear-coat damage or contamination beneath the coating. A high spot sits in the coating layer. A defect below the coating will normally follow the paint condition and may remain visible from every angle.
Why high spots happen
The working area was too large
If the section is larger than you can apply, level and inspect properly, part of it can progress further than the rest. Smaller sections give you more control, especially on warm days, complex panels and the first few sections of a job.
The applicator was unevenly loaded
A dry edge on the applicator can leave thin coverage while a heavily loaded edge leaves excess product. Load the applicator evenly and overlap the passes without flooding the surface.
The removal towel was already loaded
A towel can look clean while it is carrying enough residue to move product rather than remove it. Once it begins to drag, smear or lose its clean working face, replace it.
The lighting was too soft or came from one direction
Ordinary room lighting can hide residue. Strong, even inspection lighting must be used from several angles. Light-coloured paint and curved panels often need more deliberate checking because the defect can vanish from one position and appear from another.
The installer followed a fixed internet wipe time
There is no responsible universal wipe time for every workshop. Temperature, humidity, airflow, panel temperature, surface type, applicator load and section size all influence how residue behaves. Follow the current OP888 directions and respond to the actual surface rather than copying a number from a different product, climate or video.
Set up the job before opening OP888
- OPTiX OP888 Universal Ceramic Coating in its current live format;
- a clean microfibre or foam coating applicator;
- at least three clean, suitable microfibre removal towels, plus spares;
- nitrile gloves and the PPE specified by the current label and SDS;
- strong inspection lighting that can be moved or viewed from different angles;
- a cool, clean, completely dry and correctly prepared surface;
- the current OP888 application and safety directions.
Do not start on a hot panel, in direct sun, in rain, or where dust and overspray can land on the vehicle. If you cannot maintain suitable conditions for the full job and cure period, change the work area or postpone the application.
How to prevent OP888 high spots
1. Finish the paint preparation first
Wash and decontaminate the vehicle as required. Inspect the paint, correct defects where appropriate, and remove polishing residue and oils with a suitable coating-preparation product. Dry panel gaps, badges, trims and edges completely.
A coating is not a substitute for preparation. If haze or residue is already on the panel, coating over it can lock the problem underneath and make diagnosis harder.
2. Establish a test section
Choose a small, easily inspected section. Apply OP888 evenly using the current directions. Watch how the coating behaves in the actual workshop conditions before deciding how large every later section should be.
The test section is where you confirm your applicator load, towel sequence, lighting angles and working rhythm. If anything is unclear, solve it here rather than across the bonnet.
3. Work in manageable sections
Divide large panels mentally or with natural body lines. Keep sections small enough that you can apply an even film, level it and inspect it without rushing. Reduce the area further on complex shapes, warm sections, vertical panels or when learning the product.
Overlap application passes sufficiently to avoid gaps, but do not repeatedly flood the boundary. Keep track of where the previous section finished.
4. Use a deliberate towel sequence
Use the current OPTiX levelling method. Keep one towel face for the initial controlled pass and a clean face or separate towel for the final inspection pass when the directions require it. Fold towels so you always know which faces are clean.
Do not keep using a towel because it is convenient. Replace it when it is loaded, damp with product, dragging or creating smears.
5. Inspect before moving on
Check the section directly, from the side and from the opposite direction. Move your head and the light. Pay special attention to body lines, panel edges, mirror bases, door handles and the boundary between sections.
Only move forward when the section looks even from every useful angle. A fast application followed by a full-vehicle inspection is not the same as inspecting each section while you still have the best chance to address residue safely.
6. Recheck adjacent sections
When the next section is complete, briefly inspect the overlap and the previous section again. This catches residue transferred by a towel, product creeping from a badge, or a boundary that was invisible from the earlier angle.
7. Protect the cure
After application, follow the current OP888 requirements for cure, water exposure, chemical exposure and handling. Do not add unverified toppers or wipe the vehicle repeatedly because you are nervous about the finish.
If you see a high spot during application
Stop expanding the job. Keep the affected panel under strong light and follow the current OP888 directions for residue that is still within the workable stage. Use clean materials and the least aggressive approved action.
Do not reach automatically for a strong solvent, compound or abrasive pad. A method that is suitable on sound clear coat may be unsuitable on paint protection film, matte finishes, delicate refinishing or an unknown surface.
Once the section is even, recheck it from several angles before continuing. Reduce the size of the next section and replace any towel that contributed to the problem.
If the coating has already cured
A cured high spot needs assessment, not panic. First identify the coated surface and confirm whether the mark is in the coating or below it. Check the current OP888 technical advice before attempting correction.
On suitable automotive clear coat, professional assessment may determine that controlled polishing and reapplication are required. The exact method depends on the paint condition, coating cure and defect depth. Do not publish or follow a one-step abrasive recipe for every vehicle.
On PPF, satin or matte finishes, delicate refinished paint, glass or an unknown substrate, stop and seek surface-specific advice. Polishing can permanently alter some surfaces, and aggressive chemical correction can damage film or paint.
Troubleshooting the cause
The whole panel looks smeared
Check towel loading, product quantity, working area and lighting. Do not continue coating other panels until the method produces one clean, even test section.
Only the section borders are visible
Your overlaps may be too wet, too wide or inconsistently levelled. Mark the start and finish of each section mentally and inspect boundaries before advancing.
High spots keep appearing on curved panels
Reduce section size and change the lighting angle. Curves can hide residue when viewed straight on. Inspect along the panel rather than only across it.
The applicator feels grabby
The coating in the applicator maybe have gone off, replacing the applicator usually fixes it.
A mark remains after levelling
It may not be coating residue. Compare it with the paint inspection completed before application. If the cause is uncertain, stop rather than escalating to a more aggressive correction.
Common mistakes to avoid
- coating an entire bonnet before levelling;
- using one removal towel for the whole vehicle;
- working under ordinary ceiling lights only;
- adding extra product to “fix” every mark without checking the current directions;
- using a universal wipe time from another coating;
- coating hot, damp or contaminated surfaces;
- trying to polish PPF or matte finishes without exact approval;
- letting speed take priority over section-by-section inspection.
Frequently asked questions
Will an OP888 high spot disappear by itself?
Do not rely on it. Inspect and address residue using the current directions while the correct response remains available. A cured defect can require more work.
Does more coating give better protection?
Excess product that cannot be levelled evenly is not a better result. Apply a controlled, even film according to the current instructions.
Can I use the same towel for every panel?
No fixed towel count suits every vehicle, but a towel must be replaced as soon as it becomes loaded or begins to drag. Having clean spares ready is part of the job.
Can a beginner apply OP888?
OP888 is the more controlled and forgiving coating in the OPTiX range and can suit a careful, prepared DIY user. Forgiving does not mean foolproof. Preparation, lighting, clean towels and methodical inspection are still essential.
