Choosing the right OPTIX pad for OPTiX Utopia compound
Choosing the Right OPTiX Pad for UTOPIA Cutting Compound
OPTiX UTOPIA Cutting Compound is the first stage in the OPTiX 2-stage polishing system.
It is designed for defect removal, paint correction and cleaner cutting before the finish is refined with OPTiX UTOPIA Ultra Fine.
The compound is only one part of the result. The pad you choose changes how much cut, finish and control you get from UTOPIA.

Purple Haze Wool Pad — highest cut
The OPTiX Purple Haze Wool Pad gives the highest cut in the OPTiX pad range.
Use it with UTOPIA when the paint needs stronger correction and a foam pad is not giving enough bite.
It is best suited for:
- Heavier swirl marks
- Oxidation
- Weathered paint
- Defect removal before refining
- Paint that needs more cutting power
Because this is the highest cut option, the finish may need to be refined afterwards with a softer pad and UTOPIA Ultra Fine.
Green Slim Line Foam Pad — heavy cut foam
The OPTiX Green Slim Line Foam Pad is the heavy cut foam option.
Use it when you want strong cut from UTOPIA but prefer the feel and control of foam.
It is best suited for:
- Moderate to heavy defects
- Swirl marks
- Oxidised paint
- Paint correction with better foam control
- Users wanting a heavy cut pad without moving to wool
Orange Slim Line Foam Pad — medium cut and better finish
The OPTiX Orange Slim Line Foam Pad is the medium cut pad in the Slim Line range.
This is a good choice when you want UTOPIA to correct defects but still finish cleaner than a heavier cutting pad.
It is best suited for:
- General swirl removal
- Light to moderate defects
- Paint enhancement work
- One-step style correction on suitable paint
- Users wanting a balance of cut and gloss
White Slim Line Foam Pad — light polishing with UTOPIA
The OPTiX White Slim Line Foam Pad is the light polishing option.
Use it with UTOPIA when the paint does not need heavy cutting, or when you want a cleaner finish from the compound before stepping into a final finishing stage.
It is best suited for:
- Light defects
- Cleaner finishing
- Gloss improvement
- Paint that does not need aggressive correction
- Refining after stronger pad use
Why Slim Line Pads feel smoother on DA polishers
The biggest difference with OPTiX Slim Line Pads is how they feel on dual action polishers compared with thicker pads.
A thicker pad can absorb more machine movement and may feel more wobbly during polishing.
Because OPTiX Slim Line Pads sit closer to the backing plate, they can give a smoother, more direct polishing feel. This helps with control across curves, panels and edges.
The benefits are simple:
- Smoother DA operation
- Better control
- Less pad roll
- More direct machine feel
- Easier handling on curves and tighter panels
When to follow with UTOPIA Ultra Fine
UTOPIA Cutting Compound is the cutting stage.
After cutting, some paints will need a finishing stage to sharpen gloss and clarity. This is especially true on dark paint, soft paint, piano black trims and high-gloss surfaces where haze can show more easily.
For final finishing, use OPTiX UTOPIA Ultra Fine with a softer pad.
For Ultra Fine, the common pad choices are:
- Orange Slim Line Foam Pad — one-step very light cut and finish
- White Slim Line Foam Pad — very fine cut and higher gloss
- Black Slim Line Foam Pad — ultra fine finishing and maximum gloss
Simple recommendation
If you need maximum cut, start with Purple Haze.
If you want heavy foam correction, use Green.
If you want a balanced cut and finish, use Orange.
If you only need light polishing, use White.
Then finish with UTOPIA Ultra Fine when extra gloss and clarity are needed.
Choose the pad for the paint condition first. Then refine the finish before protection.
After polishing: protect the finish
Once the paint is corrected and refined, protect the finish with the right coating.
For most users, OPTiX OP888 is the practical all-round coating option.
