FMJ is the most performance-focused ceramic coating in the OPTiX Nano range. It is thicker, tougher and more demanding to level than OP888, so the right question is not simply, “Which coating is strongest?” The better question is, “Which coating can I install properly on this vehicle, in this environment, with my current experience?”

This guide explains where OPTiX FMJ Graphene Ceramic Coating fits, when the more controlled OP888 is the safer choice, and how to approach an FMJ application without shortcuts or exaggerated claims.

What FMJ is designed to do

FMJ is an SiO₂-based ceramic coating enhanced with reduced graphene oxide. The graphene component is used to support coating behaviour, consistency, slickness and surface feel. We do not treat the word “graphene” as magic.

On correctly prepared paint, FMJ is designed to support gloss intensity, surface clarity, chemical resistance, slickness and long-term maintenance performance. It can reduce contamination build-up and improve wash behaviour when the vehicle is maintained correctly.

FMJ is still a coating, not armour. It does not make paint scratch-proof, stone-chip-proof or maintenance-free. Physical impact protection requires a different solution, such as suitable paint protection film.

Who should choose FMJ?

FMJ suits professional installers and advanced users who already understand:

  • safe washing and decontamination;
  • paint assessment and machine correction;
  • final coating preparation;
  • controlled application and levelling;
  • high-spot inspection;
  • cure protection; and
  • realistic customer aftercare.

A controlled workshop is the best environment. An experienced mobile installer may also use FMJ when conditions can be kept within the current product requirements, but the job should not proceed if temperature, moisture, dust or weather cannot be controlled.

When OP888 is the safer choice

Choose OP888 when predictable application behaviour and a more forgiving working process matter more than moving straight to the thickest coating. OP888 is the practical choice for a careful first coating project, a developing detailer or a mobile operator working in varied conditions.

Choosing OP888 is not “settling for less”. A coating that is installed and levelled correctly will give a better real-world outcome than a more demanding coating applied beyond the installer’s control.

Suitable surfaces and limitations

The current FMJ product information lists compatibility with correctly prepared modern original and refinished automotive clear coats. It may also be used on wheels, glass, selected hard exterior surfaces and compatible paint protection film as part of a layered system.

Always test sensitive, custom, aged or refinished surfaces first. Check the surface manufacturer’s current care and warranty requirements. Do not assume that a result on modern clear coat proves suitability for every wheel, glass treatment, film or custom finish.

Do not apply FMJ over unstable paint, moisture, contamination, polishing oil or a hot panel. Stop when the surface condition cannot be corrected safely.

  • enough clean microfibre levelling and inspection towels;

Verified FMJ working and cure information

The current live FMJ product page states:

  • application temperature: under 30°C;
  • working time: up to 3 minutes;
  • recoat time: less than 2 hours;
  • drive ready: within 1 hour; and
  • full cure: 3–7 days.

Those figures are not permission to ignore the panel. Temperature, humidity, panel condition, coating thickness and the application environment can change cure behaviour. Use the current product directions and inspect the section in front of you.

Prepare the vehicle properly

1. Inspect before washing

Look for failing clear coat, repairs, overspray, water spotting, deep defects, contamination and old protection. Agree on the finish that can be achieved safely. FMJ will protect the result underneath; it will not remove defects.

2. Wash thoroughly

Remove loose dirt and road film using safe wash media. Clean badges, trim edges, mirrors, panel gaps and other locations that can release water later.

3. Decontaminate as required

Use appropriate chemical and bonded-contamination removal for the surface. Inspect again afterwards because decontamination can reveal defects or create marring that needs refinement.

4. Correct the paint

Machine polish or correct to the agreed level. Do not chase the final defect when remaining paint condition, edges or previous repairs make further correction unsafe.

5. Remove residue and oil

Clean polishing dust, then use a suitable coating-preparation product. Inspect for smearing under more than one light angle.

6. Dry every gap

Water from mirrors, handles, badges and edges can ruin a controlled application. Dry these areas and allow them to stop releasing moisture before opening FMJ.

FMJ application workflow

  1. Read the current directions. Confirm the approved surface, application method, levelling point, recoat requirements and cure protection.
  2. Check the temperature. FMJ’s current application requirement is under 30°C. Measure and manage the panel rather than relying only on the room temperature display.
  3. Choose a manageable section. FMJ is more demanding than OP888. Reduce the section size around curves, body lines and complex panels.
  4. Load a clean applicator. Apply according to the current directions and keep the applicator away from dust, water and used towels.
  5. Create a controlled, even film. Overlap passes and avoid flooding badges, edges, seams and porous trim.
  6. Monitor the working window. The live product page states up to three minutes, but do not wait blindly for a timer when the coating is clearly ready to level sooner under the current conditions.
  7. Level with clean towels. Rotate towel faces and replace a towel when it becomes loaded or starts to drag.
  8. Inspect from several angles. Look for dark patches, rainbow residue, heavy edges and missed boundaries.
  9. Recheck adjoining sections. High spots commonly remain around curves, badges and overlaps rather than in the middle of a flat panel.
  10. Protect the cure. Follow the current one-hour drive-ready and three-to-seven-day full-cure guidance, including all restrictions in the current directions.

Application checkpoints

  • The surface is stable, cool, clean and dry.
  • The panel is under the current 30°C limit.
  • The section is small enough to control without rushing.
  • The applicator and every towel face remain clean.
  • Residue is inspected from several angles.
  • The recoat and cure periods are recorded for the customer.

Common mistakes

Choosing FMJ for the label rather than the job

“Graphene” and “professional” are not reasons to use a product beyond your experience. Choose FMJ because the vehicle, environment and installer suit it.

Treating three minutes as a fixed waiting time

The published figure is “up to” three minutes. Conditions can change coating behaviour. Watch the section and follow the current instructions.

Working sections that are too large

A large section gives fewer chances to catch residue before it becomes difficult. Shrink the working area until application, levelling and inspection remain controlled.

Trying to finish with loaded towels

Loaded microfibre can redistribute residue. Prepare more towels than the minimum you think you will need and remove a towel from the job when it starts to drag.

Assuming full cure after the vehicle can be driven

Drive-ready and full cure are different stages. The current FMJ information states drive ready within one hour and full cure in three to seven days. The customer needs accurate instructions for that full period.

Troubleshooting

A section is difficult to level

Move to clean towel faces, reduce the working area and check panel temperature. Stop adding more coating as a guess. Follow current OPTiX correction guidance before the residue hardens further.

A dark patch remains under angled light

Treat it as possible remaining residue or a high spot. Address it using current OPTiX directions. If it has hardened or you are uncertain, stop before aggressive rubbing or unapproved chemical use damages the finish.

Moisture appears during application

Stop, dry the source and reassess the area. Do not spread water across fresh coating or continue over a damp surface.

The paint still looks wrong after preparation

Do not expect FMJ to hide the problem. Reinspect the correction, residue removal and panel condition. Correct it safely or postpone the coating.

Aftercare that protects the result

Once the current cure requirements have been satisfied, wash with a suitable pH-neutral automotive shampoo, clean microfibre wash media and gentle drying methods. Soft clean towels or forced air can reduce avoidable contact.

Remove bird droppings, insects, sap and harsh contamination promptly. Avoid abrasive wash tools and aggressive chemicals. A coated vehicle can still develop swirls, water spots, scratches and dullness when maintained badly.

Is FMJ suitable for a beginner?

It is not positioned as an entry-level coating. OP888 is the better starting point when you need controlled, predictable application behaviour.

Can FMJ be layered?

The current product page says FMJ can be layered when applied correctly and lists a recoat time of less than two hours. Follow the current directions for the exact job rather than assuming more layers are automatically better.

Can FMJ go on wheels and glass?

Those surfaces are listed, but suitability still needs to be checked. Test sensitive or custom finishes and follow the surface manufacturer’s instructions.
